Course context

For my Communication for Engineers final presentation, I examined how the United States could add dependable, low-carbon generation while electricity demand grows and variable renewable generation becomes a larger part of the grid.

Research and presentation

  • Researched SMR architecture, modular construction, passive-safety concepts, deployment economics, waste, and the role of firm generation in a mixed energy system.
  • Built and delivered a persuasive final presentation on why the United States should continue investing in SMR development and deployment.
  • Connected the SMR discussion to a second course presentation on AI-driven data-center demand and the mix of renewables, nuclear power, efficiency, storage, and grid investment needed to meet it.

Communication approach

  • Separated established reactor and grid concepts from forward-looking deployment claims.
  • Addressed safety, cost, construction time, and waste directly instead of treating public acceptance as only a messaging problem.
  • Connected technical concepts to concrete grid and industrial use cases so the audience could understand why firm power matters.

Outcome

  • Completed and delivered the final presentation while developing a clearer understanding of SMR deployment questions and the relationship between nuclear, renewables, industrial heat, and load growth.
  • Practiced explaining complex energy-system tradeoffs accurately to a non-specialist audience.
